Project 2 - Edges
For my project, I have decided to base it on the theme of 'Edges'. I have found several photographers that I would like to analyse and investigate. I also think that they fit in with my chosen theme of edges . The 3 photographers that I have chosen to fit in with this theme are Stefano Corso, Jed Devine and Kevin Saint Grey. I used a website called 'Popplet' to create a mind map of initial ideas as shown below.
Edges
Stefano Corso shows edges of structures in urban settings, keeping in mind the light and shadows to create an interesting but simplistic look. Kevin Saint Grey uses a similar theme in his work by taking photographs of the edges of buildings at an upwards angle. His work also shows sharp lines and corners that I like the look of. Jed Devine has a different approach than the two other photographers. He uses the simplicity of every day objects instead of structures within his work like the other photographers.

Initial Photographs
I started out by taking photographs of what first thoughts and ideas I had regarding the theme 'Edges'. I liked the idea taking close up photos of using the corners and edges of objects indoors. I slightly edited the photographs in an app on my phone called 'VSCO CAM'. There are many adjustments that you can make on this app including contrast, exposure, cropping and plenty of filters.
I am going to use these photographs as a starting point when trying to do my other photo shoots. I feel that these initial photos are mostly inspired by Jed Devine, as a lot of his work is based in an indoor setting. However, these photos are also similar to the style of Kevin Saint Grey who uses straight, clean lines and corners. I will be doing 3 photo shoots with each of them being inspired by the photographers that I have chosen, whilst keeping in mind the theme that I have chosen which is 'Edges'.
Analysis of Chosen Photographers
Stefano Corso - In this photograph Stefano Corso shows two people walking on their own on different routes. In lots of his other photographs he shows people on their own in different settings. Straight away my eyes are drawn to the person on the right hand side of the image who is shown in clear light, but if you look closer there is someone on the left hand side in the shadow. There are lots of lines in this image including the shadows and the many lines of the bridge structure. The various edges and lines in this photo inspired me to use Stefano Corso as inspiration for my project theme choice. I feel that the photographer is trying to show a sort of loneliness in his photos because he always focuses on somebody who is on their own. Elements that he has used in his work such as using the complex lines of structures, as well as the use of both sharp and curved edges have inspired me to use these in my own work. |
Kevin Saint Grey -
The photograph that I am going to be analysing is by photographer Kevin Saint Grey who specialises in shooting black and white photographs of modern architecture. This photograph shows the sharp lines and edges of a building that he has taken looking upwards. The subject matter of this photo is the building which is shown against the sky which looks edited to give a blurred effect. In the photo, the background takes up most of the space because the subject matter takes up just about less than half of the photograph. I find this photo interesting because it combines an interesting viewpoint with a really clear edge, which has inspired me to use a similar approach for my project theme photographs. This photo (as well his other photos) are different compared to the other photographers work that I chose as inspiration for my project. Kevin Saint Grey has a minimalistic and very clean style compared to the other photographers. Elements in his work like the use of sharp, clean lines are what I will use as inspiration for when I take my photographs for the project.

Jed Devine -
In Jed Devine's work, he shows the simplicity of everyday objects to create interesting compositions. In this photograph, material is used to create a clean cut edge which splits across the photo. Everyday objects are then scattered over the two areas to make it look more interesting. I don't think there is one specific part of the image that draws in my attention because I feel that each part of the image just adds to the overall photo. I like that the image is split into a black and white background because I feel it would be uninteresting if it were just one colour. Jed Devine's work has inspired me to look at everyday objects and arranging them for a photo. I also like that he uses everyday objects to make the photo come together. When I take photos that are inspired by Jed Devine, I will look at the edges of everyday objects as well as different lines and shapes. I will also look at any shadows that are created with objects. |
